Globalisation and increasing digital convergence has made user data collection a universal phenomenon. Consequently, the economy is becoming more data driven which creates opportunities for businesses and government to deliver more efficient products and services to the end users but on the contrary raises privacy concerns.

Privacy is about giving an individual or organization with the choice to allow or deny what information about them can be collected and shared with whom, used in what manner, and till what extent. With the advancement of the Information age and data driven services, the need for privacy gained momentum by late 20th century. This led governments to start focusing on laws and regulations, businesses to create frameworks and standards for privacy governance, and various initiatives were undertaken to create privacy awareness at the individual level. However, with growing digitization and various privacy violation use cases, recently privacy has caught huge attention from policy makers and regulators. Newly imposed regulations come with huge legal, contractual, civil and criminal liabilities on the data processor and data controllers which demand significant focus towards privacy protection.

The pace at which technological developments are taking place, with ever increasing possibilities for seamless flow of data across systems, privacy implementation is becoming more difficult. The starting point is to proactively engage and collaborate with developers right from the solution development stage and works towards incorporating privacy-by-design to minimize the scope for privacy vulnerabilities. It is also important to ensure data protection throughout the lifecycle of the data. To keep pace with upcoming regulations and frameworks, it is important to take notice of existing pitfalls in the current privacy aspects and come up with new solutions to upkeep privacy.

This demands technological innovations which are taking place in countries like Israel. There has been a steady increase in the number of companies in privacy-protection field in across the globe. In terms of funding, privacy technologies are gaining traction globally. India needs a similar momentum to be a leader in the privacy sphere.

Introduction of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has also acted as a trigger point for discussions on technology evolution for privacy and various companies and start-ups are now focusing on developing solutions for its effective implementation and compliance. Pertaining to India, a similar Data Protection Law is on the charter.

With growing privacy concerns, understanding the challenges by taking up available use cases and coming up with innovative solutions can help alleviate our privacy posture. It’s high time for the ecosystem to look at technological solutions and innovations in the domain to fulfil global as well as India centric privacy needs. It demands stakeholders from the Industry, Academia and Government to come together and deliberate on the market needs and whitespaces which can be solved with technology.

The Use Case Clearing House (UCCH) initiative is to setup a platform to bring together researchers, entrepreneurs, solution providers, users and policy makers for brainstorming on various technology Use Cases; its Solutioneering, Designing and Prototyping which in turn will result into architecting technology solutions for these Use Cases.
