Masakkali and the Empress

~ A cultural walk that decodes the eclectic neighbourhood of Turkman Gate ~

Purani Delli (Old Delhi) is full of fables and legends that are a reminder of Delhi’s colourful past. Of these many legends and characters there was once a princess who became the first woman ruler of Delhi. She was none other than Razia Sultan and this walk is dedicated to her.

We would recommend that you kindly avail a metro to reach to this part of Old Delhi.

- If you have a personal vehicle, kindly park your vehicle at any metro station and board the metro that terminates at either 'Jahangirpuri' or 'Vishwavidyalay' (yellow line) and get down at New Delhi Metro Station.
- Kindly take exit gate no. 3 at the New Delhi Metro Station.
- Take a rickshaw or auto and get down at Turkman Gate. The rickshaw will charge you around 30 rupees.

- Alternatively, you can also get down at Chawri Bazaar Metro Station which is also on ‘yellow line’ and take exit gate no 3 and then take a rickshaw till the Turkman Gate.

- Carry a stole/ cap/ dupatta to cover your head inside the Masjid and Dargah.
- Wear conservative clothing; kindly avoid wearing shorts and capree (applies for both men and women).

- Wear appropriate walking shoes.

During the walk we will explore Turkman Gate and the story behind gates, visit the dargah of one of the oldest Sufi Saints who was the inspiration behind the gate’s name and the peer of Razia Sultan. We will stop by a serene Masjid from 16th century and spend time at the house of an old bird keeper. We will walk past the narrow lanes to visit the mazaar of Razia Sultan.

From the mazaar we will walk into the lanes of Chawri Bazaar where we will stop by for some traditional food. The walk will end with our signature theatrical storytelling on the life of the Empress inside an intimate Haveli.
