Athoi Jal

Language: Bengali
Purba Paschim, Kolkata
Drama: Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay/Ujjwal Chattopadhyay
Direction: Bratya Basu

The play is based on a famous novel by the mystic author Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay. The fiction is set in the time period of pre-WWII Bengal. The protagonist, Shashanka, is a no-nonsense kind of rural doctor, influential and strict in developing moral values among the villagers. His eventless life revolves around his wife, two offspring and a couple of sidekicks until he meets Panna, a queer-natured danseuse. Shashanka’s hatred toward music and dance turns into an irresistible sensuality that Panna carries in her art. He discovers his subconscious yearning for the fairer sex and leaves his practice of medicine to join Panna’s Theatre troupe. Foregoing his drab and disciplined life, Shashanka realizes that his craving for love and sensuality is inexorable. Shashanka may perhaps come back to his past placid life but the plunge he took in the seas of beauty and desire etches out the quiescent longing for the eternal yet unattainable bliss in every mortal.
